Why do people look down on working from home?
If I had a nickel for every time I have heard a variation of “why don’t you get a real job” or “don’t you miss being around people”, then I could easily retire after investing my tidy sum of money. For everyone that has not figured it out, I am a WAHP or WAHM or WAH or whatever initials you may chose to call me. Yes, I work at home. Yes, I have a “real” job and more importantly, I am satisfied with my lifestyle.
Last year, I decided to take my telecommuter lifestyle to the next level and I started my own forum. I poured my heart, soul and every cent into it. Although it is a losing proposition money-wise, I derive more pleasure from helping others then nearly anything I have done in my life. I do work independently for several companies that I cannot name in a blog. I have to smile as I type this since many people have no idea that telecommuter or work at home professionals are the ones doing this work.
But despite my obvious satisfaction and ability to pay my bills, I still recieve the “look” from people when they find out I am at home working. I am the recipeient of the ever popular comment that I “play” on my computer and when am I going to stop hiding at home. Ha! I work more in a day’s time then most of my cubicle friends do any day of the year.
It just burns me that people have to condemn and ridicule what they don’t understand but once they find out that I can make equal or more to what they make then they want a piece of the action. Typical behavior. Scorn what you don’t understand. Let me make it easier for you to grasp the concept.
Everytime you call in to Sears, American Express Travel, Time Warner Cable, HSN and most of the infomercials then you are more likely speaking to a homebased customer service representative. What? You didn’t realize that. Well, of course not since the entire concept is to make it as quiet and professional as a traditional call center. So see? Before you put down something, you should learn about it first. Who knows? You may decide to leave your job and come join the work at home family.
